PLASTIC DAYDREAM

DesignTide in TokyoにてBest Tokyo Design Awardを受賞する。

TRAUMARIS is pleased to announce the new collages exhibition
of Wataru Komachi. Komacih, based in two cities of Tokyo and Paris,
has been creating art works that traverse freely between art and design
fields. He started his activity, when he was found to be a talented
artist by Aesthetic of Dennis Hopper who was a prominent contemporary
arts collector. In 2000, Komachi picked up old furniture as material
and upholstered them in his original silk-screen prints fabrics.
Christophe Lemaire, a fashion designer who currently works as Artistic
Director for HERMES, made a offer for a solo exhibition with their
colaboration in Paris. The exhibiion played a role for expanding
Komachi's career to European art world.

"Like three guitar chords, I chose the way of both simple technique
and the biggest effect."  Komachi says. Each of his works is produced
with a unique approach of injecting the punk spirit to mundane
products by elegant way. Since Duchamp's ready-made, in the history of
the “Sampling and Remixing” art, if some artist should be raise for
having close linkage with Komachi stance, I would like mention Jim Lambie,
an artist from Glasgow Scotland. In the same way of Jim, as he himself
names his works  "handmade ritual mashed up in the bedroom",
Komachi's "touch" shows the most sparkling faces in his handmade
collages which he has been making since his debut, just like everyday stretch
exercise. In spite of their looks as an easy playing, the new collages of
Komachi express the definite delicacy and sense of improvisation.

The series of three exhibitions are going to be held at TRAUMARIS in 2012.
Next date will be announced shortly.

Plastic Daydream

Chie Sumiyoshi

(Art Producer and writer, Presidency of TRAUMARIS)

There's a moment in each and everyone, where a certain device will bring up the feelings touch that we had in the teenage years back in our mind. Not to mention music, which probably has an ability to give us those flashbacks at the most ease. And for those who spent their teenage years in the 1970's - without a doubt, the punk music is the device that will easily reboot all the feelings touch from those days.

The sound of small drum set kicking off the beat in full speed; the guitar strums it's three cords as if it was only learned a day before; the aching shout that expresses the painful anger. Entrusting the impulse, the sensation of the fragile and cheap teenage daydream comes in acceleration. Born in the rubbish heap of London, colored with boredom and ostentation as it went across to NY, and drifting ashore to LA. ‘the punk movement’ left to the kids something like a splinter which is never removed and forwards to their inside.

Wataru Komachi explains, “Punk is a pure elegance, like a flash of a firework. Definitely not violence. The way energy bursts within the punk is from the irritation within one self’s hopelessness. Punk used to be the music for the rubbish bracing to not become the true loser. I think that's what it really is”. The splinter inside of Komachi keeps positively stimulating his nerve.

Komachi bases in the two major cities; Tokyo and Paris, creating works that are accepted freely from the multiple fields; art, product and fashion. In 2000, Komachi produced an artwork where he replaced the fabrics from the antique furniture to his original handprint fabric made out of the silkscreen. “Like three codes on guitar, I chose the most effective and simple method”. As it said, the artwork had the original approach where it brought the punk spirit to a common product in an elegant way.

In 2005, Komachi exhibited an artwork consisting of a Japanese traditional dyed pattern “Sometsuke-shitae-doban” to the ceramic pots which are extremely near to original though it’s mass production. The artwork was awarded as the Best Tokyo Design from Design Tide Tokyo. To create this artwork, Komachi excavated ceramic pots that seem to fit his image of 'cheap' from the countless dead stocks that were left in the “Tajimi” and “Seto”  factories. On top of this, he added the ever-so-common phrase; “HAVE A NICE DAY” in a faded worn out writing. Regarding the artwork he mentions, “I wanted to make something that's sold in a typical souvenir shops around the tourist spots in US. I like those greeting phrases like 'HAVE A NICE DAY! FOREVER' which is not nice at all - just has that ironical nuance”.

“Ready-made” “duplication art” “collage” “quotation” and “appropriation” are standard way of contemporary art productions which started around Duchamp and Andy Warhol, however, the new generation who have appeared in the recent years of the art scene shows a shift in a style using the detailed technique, and the close examined material like in history. And there, various artists are challenging their way to express the unique differences with the others as well as their original world perspectives.

However, on the other hand, Komachi continues to keep the presence of ‘punk’ in himself. Making the artworks to be viewed as if it was created at ease; acknowledge the mass productions and samplings. With the unchanged perspective since the debut in the art world, Komachi stands tall as an expressionist without the fear of loss in the values.

“I ask myself. If I was a teenager seeing myself how do I look? Showing off? Won't you take it easy as you are? Only the audience defines artist’s originality and work style.” says Komachi

From those things, suggestive of Jim Lambie, an artist from Glasgow Scotland who was nominated for England’s The Turner Prize, is around Komachi’s age. Lambie was once before a musician, from his background with the music beat and rhythm he throws music titles in to his works . He jams up rubbish materials such as plastic taps and records jacket which are easily found anywhere. The works is just like a ritual dedicated to his musical experiences to keep the teenage feelings touch and reflect his pride the artist does not lose even if established.

“I think there may be the art with lighter footwork. For me, the word “everyone can do” is the best compliments. As the punk anything more than cheap child dream made out of plastic was charming, I am not interested in things in eternal or already established. In terms of shaping feel of hurtling days, expressing sense and initial impulse though filter myself instantly is fascinating.” Komachi says.

Recent years, Komachi's world holds the pop image; graffiti pin-ups, collaged portrait of Kate Moss, and in neon signs works the collaboration of the captive light and the cynical messages, etc. The artworks may seem like a colorful candy at first,it has the strong spirits dissolved together. Once it's in your mouth carelessly - the splinter inside your body may stimulated by the artistic spirit.
